Woensel West is a neighborhood in Eindhoven, an industrial city in center of the Netherlands. The neighborhood was built by Philips to house its workers and their families, It is an early example of social housing in the Netherlands, but its age is beginning to show. Spearheaded by it owner, woonstichting Trudo, the neighbourhood is now being reinvigorated according to a plan made by DiederenDirrix architects. Part of the reinvigorating strategy are sixteen ‘eye-catchers’, an iconic design that is propped up on a 3m high pedestal. An open architecture competition was conducted for two of these eye-catching corners. This particular corner is interesting as it is the corner of the only alley leading directly to a hidden square called the Baekelandplein, the center of Eindhoven’s own modest ‘Red Light District’.

The design is a ode to temptation, the dress caught in a playful wind, a glimpse of nirvana. A sultry pose for hope, hope for recognition, for acknowledgement.

De wijk Woensel West in Eindhoven is een oude arbeiderswijk die te boek staat als “krachtwijk”. DiederenDirrix architecten heeft een plan gemaakt om de wijk een nieuw elan te geven voor de eigenaar van de meeste woningen, woonstichting Trudo. In dit plan zijn een zestiental “eyecatchers” bedacht op de hoeken van de Edisonstraat, de as van de wijk. Twee van deze hoeken zijn uitgeschreven als onderdeel van deze prijsvraag. Deze hoek is interessant omdat het een toegang is naar een verborgen pleintje. Het Baekelandplein is het centrum van Eindhovens eigen bescheiden ‘Red Light District’.

Dit ontwerp een ode aan de verleiding, de opwaaiende jurk, de glimp van een onbereikbaar nirwana. Een verleidende pose voor de hoop, de hoop gezien te worden, erkend te worden.
